- Phones lose millions of text messages
Millions of short text messages sent between mobile phones in the United
States are lost every month, and the chance of two parties connecting
depends on which networks they use, a study released Wednesday says.
Internet performance measurement company Keynote Systems Inc. says in its study
that 7.5 percent of all short text messages sent between wireless telephone
companies are lost.
The increasingly popular service known as SMS (Short Message Service)
allows mobile phone users to send brief messages instantaneously to their
friends and family. It typically costs 10 cents to send a message and
pennies to nothing to receive one.

- Ericsson Confirms Filing Patents But Denies Developing Antiradiation
Devices
Ericsson confirmed that it filed patents for products that reduce radio
waves in its handsets but says that it is not developing any such
products and maintains its view that there is no link between handsets and
health problems. In response to earlier press reports that the company
had filed the patents and may thus be backing down on its position about the
risks to health from mobile phone use, Ericsson spokesman Mikael Westmark says
there are no such products being developed and also that the company is not
doing any research in this field.

- Major Mobile Phone Makers Patenting Antiradiation Devices
The world's largest mobile telephone manufacturers have been
patenting devices to reduce the risk of brain tumors among users while
rejecting claims of any health hazards, reports The Times of London. Nokia,
Ericsson, and Motorola have obtained patents on new components to shield users
from radiation emissions from the handsets, says the Times. The patents show
that the manufacturers have been working on radiation-reducing components for
at least eight years. The companies maintain that there is no contradiction
between their public stance and the existence of the patents.
